The Final One - 2009

I was checking up with a friend of mine as to what was up on New Year’s eve. ‘I am to myself’, replied my friend. ‘Alone? ’ was my query. The friend replied ‘not alone, but with myself.’

The friend continued ‘I will go home, watch a movie, have a good dinner, eat Baskin Robbins ice cream and go to bed. I have to report for work tomorrow and I need to start the New Year with a lot of vitality and energy.’. This was amazing and a new way of looking at things. I was generally joking saying that one had already reached the highest level in the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs - ‘Self Actualisation’ or the stage of ‘Nirvana.’

Later on, I was thinking that being with oneself and reflecting on what happened and what needs to be done was an amazing way to ring out the old and ring in the new. Being at peace with oneself and enjoying the moments alone is really powerful and invigorating. Of course, people have their own ways of calling in the new year and each to his own. Enjoyment and happiness can be got alone and need not be necessarily with someone else being present . That’s amazing and a very different perspective.

I like to sign off with TS Eliot’s quote:
‘For last year's words belong to last year's language.
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.’ Wishing all of you A Very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

A great post as always and I frequently spend New Years alone simply because I enjoy looking back and looking forward to a new day, a new year in my life. I celebrate in my own way and it is a time for reflection. Thank you so much, Subramanian, for your visits, for your lovely and encouraging comments! You are an inspiration! Wishing you and yours a very Happy New Year!

Wise words - it is foolish indeed to expect everyone to react, embrace, welcome in the same way. Our New Year's Eve is always quiet - a time to draw breath after a busy Christmas.
Happy 20101

Dear Sir,
For me it was always like if you want to celebrate you should have some good company with whom you are relaxed and comfirtable.but never thought of finding that good company in my own self. When i am upset I prefer to be alone then why I always need company to enjoy and to celebrate.:-)
Beautiful blog sir.

Nice writings Subba, visiting your blog after long...just casually went surfing and decided to read your pages....and couldn't resist posting my thoughts!

It's true of not just the New Year but ringing in anything New in Life. Often, the best treasures in life are attained thru moments and warmth of self thoughts and not necessarily being with someone...I know that for sure....over the past few years of my living.... and more recently now, doubling up as father and mother!
What matters is how you live those moments ! And one sure receipe' to attain this is spirituality.I have learnt that enjoyment and happiness are a state of mind and self created and we have the option of choosing it !
